The summer components for the 2013 Scratch workshops have been completed.  At this time, teachers are back in their home districts preparring to use Scratch in their courses this fall.  Teachers will return to campus on November 2nd or 9th to discuss their results.

What is CS4HS UNI?

CS4HS UNI is a workshop program offered by the computer science department at the University of Northern Iowa thanks to ongoing support from Google.  The goal of these workshops is to prepare teachers to use computational tools and thinking in their classrooms; both in computer science courses and in content-area courses such as math, science, and the humanities.

UNI has been participating in CS4HS since 2010 and has worked with nearly 100 pre-service and in-service teachers from across the state of Iowa.

  What is Scratch?

Scratch is a graphical programming language/learning environment that allows students to learn about computer programming and computational thinking without worrying about complicated syntax.  It was created by the Lifelong Kindergarden Lab at the MIT Media Lab and is designed for students from aged 8-18 but is used by programmers of a variety of age and experience levels

What is required?

Teachers participating in the CS4HS program at UNI must commit to the following:

  • Attending one of two workshops in the summer of 2013 (June 26-28 or July 17-19).
  • Implementing Scratch in at least one course during the fall of 2013.
  • Attending one of two followup meetings (Saturday, November 2nd or 9th).

  What will participants get?

In addition to three days of instruction in the summer workshops, participants will receive a variety of materials to use while teaching Scratch, access to a cadre of peer teachers, access to UNI faculty who can help with lesson planning and computer science materials, lunch each day, and one-hour of graduate/professional development credit through continuing education at UNI.

How much does it cost?

Nothing!

CS4HS is paid for through generous, ongoing support from Google and the University of Northern Iowa.
