Secure Deletion of Files in the Operating System Storage Data Path

The amount of sensitive data stored on electronic media increases as the use of computers and mobile devices becomes more prevalent. As this amount grows, so, too, does the need for an ability to securely remove information. Short of physically destroying the storage medium, existing secure deletion solutions tend to be piecemeal at best. They may work only for one type of storage or file system, force the user to delete all files instead of selective files, require the added complexities of encryption and key storage, require extensive changes and additions to the computer's operating system or storage firmware, and not handle system crashes gracefully.
This talk discusses challenges behind modern secure deletion and introduces a holistic framework that irrevocably deletes file data and metadata based on the notion of information sharing in the operating system.
Dr. Diesburg is a postdoctoral researcher at Florida State University. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Florida State in 2012, her M.S. in Information Assurance from Florida State in 2008, and her B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Northern Iowa in 2004.
Her research interests address security and privacy issues of electronic storage. She is also interested in finding methods to improve and optimize the communication pathways in the operating system between the application and storage layers. Previously, she has worked in research to facilitate instruction of parallel computing through non-destructive, drop-in classroom environments.
