Setting up your Virtual Machine

We will be using a virtual machine using the latest Debian 9 distribution. This will run using VMWare Workstation (or Fusion if you have a Mac). Before beginning, make sure you have a computer that has > 4GB of RAM and 40GB of free space. If you do not have access to such a computer, please talk to me so that I can get you access to a cloud-based virtual machine.

Obtaining Workstation

Check your UNI email. You should have received notification that an account was created for you in the VMWare store. Use the information in that email to log into your account.

The VMware store is here: Class VMWare Store

Download the latest version of VMWare Workstation (for Windows and Linux) or VMWare Fusion (for Mac) and install it on your computer. If it has trouble launching, you MAY need to go into your BIOS and enable the Intel or AMD virtual instruction on your CPU.

Installing your class virtual machine

Click here to download the file cs3430-sp19-amd64.ova. (Be sure to download this on campus or a fast network, because it is around 3GB large.)

Double-click on the downloaded file. This will open the following window. Click the Import button.

If you have the RAM, you can increase the RAM given to the virtual machine up to 4096MB or higher by double-clicking on the RAM line and typing in a different amount. Remember, though, that your host operating systems needs more than the minimum amount of RAM recommended by the operating system for it to also run effectively.

Running Linux

Highlight the virtual machine you wish to run and click on the green Start button:

This will commence the Linux boot process.

There is a root user and the password is iamr00t

Otherwise, there is a default user named "user" with a password of "user", but you shouldn't need to use this account unless you want to.
