Programming in LOGO -- CNS System Usage

• Find a Computer (running Windows)

  We will mostly be using the computer lab in Wright Hall, room (WRT 112). The systems there are dual-boot systems that will run either Windows NT or Linux. Either operating system might be running on the computer you select. If the screen on your computer is dark, press the return key or move and click the mouse. In a few moments, it should display some image. Windows will show a dialog box suggesting you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to log on. Go ahead and do so (as described below in step 2).

  If Linux is running you will need to reboot. Do so as follows:

  • click the Shutdown button (a dialog window will appear)
  • click the Reboot radio button and then click the OK button
  The system should begin shutting down. A bunch of scrolling text will appear and soon the screen will be blank for a moment. The start up will begin with something quickly flashing on the screen and disappearing (this happens twice with different content). Almost immediately, a blue window will appear to give you the option of starting up with Linux or Windows NT. Use the arrow keys to highlight Windows NT (highlighted text is white). Press the enter key and Windows should begin booting.

• Log On

  When Windows NT is ready a window should appear telling you to "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to log on". Do so.

  A dialog box should appear so you can specify your user name, password, and the desired domain (lab server or individual machine). Double check the domain selection—make sure it shows CNS.LAB. Then, enter dodea as your "User name" and as your "Password". Click the OK button.

• Create a Folder for Your Files

  As you saw above we are all sharing the same account. It will be useful if we each save our work in a separate folder. So, you may as well create your folder now.

  • Open the My Computer icon that appears on the desktop.
  • Open the dodea on 'Student'(Z:) disk
  • Open the CS Participants folder
  • Use the File >> New >> Folder menu combination to create a new folder.
  • Name your folder.

• Other Stuff

  This account provides you with full access to the internet. However, you will need to access some other account to do e-mail. Most of the programs you will need for internet access should be available via the Start button and the Programs >> Internet menu combination. From there select SSH (secure telnet & ftp), Telnet, or a browser.
