Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 16:51:14 -0600 (CST) From: Mark Jacobson To: 810-021-02@uni.edu Subject: Class on Friday in the Wright 112 lab... Hi Computer Skills and Concepts students, The 810:021 class will meet in the Wright 112 lab on Friday, which is just down the hall from our Wright 105 classroom. Check out my web page at: http://www.cns.uni.edu/~jacobson Follow the link to Spring 2006 classes to get to our class web page, or just type the additional file name c021.html, as in: http://www.cns.uni.edu/~jacobson/c021.html to go directly there. (Before you bookmark the page). The editors we looked at today were Notepad (Windows editor), and pico (cowboy Unix editor). Pico is short for pine composer, and pine was the most popular email program at UNI and at Iowa for quite a few years, before reading email from your web browser became widely available and easy enough to use. pico homepage.html (or nano homepage.html) ------------------ ------------------ this is how you would edit an existing file named homepage.html, or create a brand new empty file named homepage.html if you were starting a new page from scratch. nano nano is something Mork on Mork and Mindy TV show used to say, and Mork was an alien from outer space trying to fit into late 1970s American society and pass as regular human. Robyn Williams, the comedian/actor played Mork. Anyway nano or pico is used to invoke the pico editor. ---- ---- The tags you say today will be given to you on a handout on Friday, but they are: IMG SRC="name of graphics file or URL to a graphics file" HR or HR NOSHADE Horizontal Ruler - - The A HREF= anchor tag and the /A to end the hypertext. The BODY tag, with the additional attribute specifier for the BGCOLOR= (BackGround COLOR) - - ----- BODY BGCOLOR="FF00FF" <----- The COLOR PURPLE BODY BGCOLOR="DCDCDC" <----- The COLOR Light Gray To see some other codes that can be used to specify COLORS, check out this link. http://www.hypersolutions.org/pages/rgbhex.html See you in class on Friday. Don't forgot your new account sheet with the user id and password. Bring it with you. You can change your password on Friday or next week, and then not worry about having the sheet with you. Of course, your user id you already know. Its the same UNI user id you already use elsewhere. The cowboy.cns.uni.edu computers are named: bebop.cns.uni.edu faye.cns.uni.edu jet.cns.uni.edu spike.cns.uni.edu julia.cns.uni.edu So cowboy.cns.uni.edu is a cluster of FIVE different computers. You will login to anyone of those 5 computers on Friday. It doesn't matter which one, usually. You won't have to use nano or pico editors all the time. You may prefer to write HTML using Notepad sometimes. Later, we will explore some packages for doing web pages, like Dreamweaver or Front Page or even Microsoft Word. See you on Friday in the Wright 112 computer lab. I will put a note on the blackboard in Wright 105, in case you forget. Mark
