Test One Study Guide - Fall 2016 - Monday, October 17th - class #24

  1. The NEW practice test questions created and posted on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016. These were ready on Wednesday evening.

  2. NetLOGO Turtle Trigonometry we did in class. Try this again on your own, without looking at the solution. Then try it again after studying the solution.

How does it compare to your answer: Turtle Trigonometry Solution with help on how to approach most or all of the problems using the Ghostbusters i. ii. iii. step approach of i. Venkman, ii. Stantz, and Spengler.

    1. There will be at least one TURTLE TRIGONOMETRY PROBLEM like the above on the test.

    2. Know how to use SINE, COSINE and TANGENT.
SOH, CAH, TOA. Legs of a right triangle.
      Hypotenuse of a triangle.

Adjacent Leg and Opposite Leg and Hypotenuse - with MUSIC using Scratchy the Cat from Scratch.

    3. Location of a turtle is (xcor, ycor). (160, 120) for Scratchy example you just looked at!
Hypotenuse is length 200 via MOVE 200 STEPS with PEN DOWN for draw the HYPOTENUSE.

    4. The heading of a turtle is what direction it is pointing.

Compare also to the hand-written scanned in solution: Trig30degrees.pdf ...

  3. Homework to find the location of the AIRPLANE and to find the location of the STAR:

    1. TEN turtle trig questions: TwoTurtlesTrigonometry090916.pdf. Homework handed out on 09/09/2016. Do it again! Review it!

    2. Where is WALDO? (AIRPLANE shaped turtle's (xcor, ycor)... )

    3. Where is POLARIS? (STAR shaped turtle's (xcor, ycor)... )

Solution to the TEN QUESTIONS Where is WALDO Where is POLARIS homework. Write it out, do NOT just read it! Do this until you understand it or are stuck and need to ask a question inside or outside of class or via email!

See #9 and #10 solved using the TANGENT. Instead of using CAH and SOH, using only TOA to solve #9 and #10.

Solution TEN QUESTIONS See #9, #10 pages EEE, FFF, GGG TOA solution.

  4. Friday October 14th Where is Waldo - hypotenuse 15, angle = 19 degrees, solved using SOH, CAH, and usning only TOA.

The NetLOGO program and the output. See rt 71 and fd 15 commands in the goWaldo procedure,

  5. SOH CAH TOA Trigonometry SINE, COSINE, TANGENT and Opposite, Adjacent, Hypotenuse. Sine SOH, Cosine CAH, Tangent TOA.

Turtle Trigonometry exercise. Heading, xcor, ycor, and turtle #1 having similar triangle to turtle #2.

    1. Using the TANGENT and TOA to solve the 30 degrees length 10 hypotenuse example that we used SOH and CAH to solve earlier in class.

    2. Can you use use the TANGENT and TOA if required? If you STUDY the following you can!

      • Study means take notes, do it with pen or pencil and paper. BICTION.
      • Then do it again without looking at the solution, unless you get stuck.
      • Then do it again and check your work afterward.
      • You will be able to JUST DO IT! After being unable to do it a few times, usually.
      • The TRI in TRIANGLE rhymes with TRY and TRY is part of TRY and TRY again.
      • TRI and FAIL and TRY AGAIN and get stuck and maybe fail again and then TRY AGAIN and SUCEED.
      • The point is to TRY and keep TRYING.
      • The TRI in TRIG is worth the TRY you are capable of.
      • That is the whole point (xcor, ycor) of the challenge!

    3. SOLUTION: Wednesday, September 21, 2016 Tangent solution.

  6. Where is the turtle with WHO #4 for CRO 20 turtles situation?

Practice and redoing is VIP: HOMEWORK 4 questions for heading, xcor, ycor, and then (xcor, ycor) using only the TANGENT.

  7. The Monte Carlo throwing darts and turtles to estimate the area of a region. Four part formula.

VIP: See Monday and Wednesday of WEEK #7 for MONTE CARLO in class exercise and its solution and links to support material. STUDY THIS. TAKE NOTES. There is NO TEXTBOOK for this class. Study the web pages carefully! Do and redo problems. With practice and repetition, the formulas and skills become easier!

  8. VIP: Data Flyer guide with practice questions, data and concepts. Data Flyer will be on the test and you will be able to use the Data Flyer tool on the web at SHODOR.
