Class #1 - August 22, 2016 - Catch 22 8/22/Monday first day...
Fall semester 2016/2017 academic year - known also as YOUR freshman year.

1. Swiss Army Knife - only one student got it, but it wss after the 8 a.m. class had ended. The guess was correct!
   Swiss Army Man movie started on June 24th. It is NOT the answer, but looks like a great movie. WINNER Sundance Film Festival Directing Award.

2. Question about final exam: The final exam is as follows:
   • For the 8 am MWF class it is Monday 12/12/2016 at 8 am until 9:50 am.
   • For the 12 pm MWF class it is Monday 12/12/2016 at 1 pm until 2:50 am.
   • Every UNI final exam has a TWO HOUR time slot designated during finals week.
3. Someone said they will have lots of questions when we get started on the content of the class. That will be AWESOME! It helps everyone if you have questions about the concepts and skills we will be learning.

   Look at the majors of the students who are in this class. It is NOT physics, chemistry, math or computer science majors!

4. I never knew about or ever saw the knots problem done before this morning at 8 am and this afternoon at noon. It is not only a great ice breaker that helps for comm_UNI_ity in the classroom, but it is also focused on a team using teamwork to try to solve a problem. Problem solving is a huge emphasis in this LAC class! Hooray! Teamwork will help everyone develop their's to a new level. Problem solving is key to many disciplines and pursuits, including art, music, dance, athletics, citizenship, politics, etc.

5. Monday the 22nd is Catch 22 day. Friday the 26th is national dog day. Trying to give you ways to remember your first day of and first week of school.

7. Someone asked about the software for the class. NetLOGO is free and most students after we get started just do it on their own laptop or desktop computer. Ventana VENSIM is also free, as is Scratch software. The software that you use to do 98% of all the assignments in this class is FREE and easy to install. It is also available in most of the UNI computer labs. More about where those are later on.

8. Wednesday August 24th will be class #2 and, oh my, it is also the 2 month anniversary of Swiss Army Man movie release. Again, I had no idea such a movie had come out this year. Swiss Army Knife tool refers to another great movie that you may or may not have recently seen! Keep guessing and try again on Wednesday.

9. We will get started on NetLOGO on Wednesday, after another small group exercise where you work in groups of 3 or 4 or students. It is optional, but it would be helpful if you glance at the 12 minute long video review of NetLOGO - look at the first half of it if you get a chance. You do NOT have to understand it. Do not ever be afraid of confusion. The first run through anything is supposed to be just for exposure. Confusion is FINE, is GOOD!
