Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2007 13:47:24 -0500 (CDT) From: Mark Jacobson To: 810-021-01-spring@uni.edu Subject: Fall registration (certification classes)... Hello 021 students, I know some of you are going for the Computer Science Department Certificate in Computer Applications. Today is the first day of senior registration. COURSE FALL 2007 OPEN TAKEN DAY TIME ---------- -------------------------- ---- ----- ----- ----- 810:022:01 MICRO APPS & SYSTEM INTGRT 26 4 M W F 12:00 810:030:01 VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMING 35 0 M W F 02:00 Both of these courses are part of the certificate requirement. 810:022 Microcomputer Applications and Systems Integration has only ever been offered once a year, in fall semesters. Last fall, I spent about one month on teaching Flash for the first time ever in that class. I will do that again this fall. 810:030 Visual Basic Programming is offered every semester, but I only teach it once in a while. I will be teaching it next fall, for the first time in two years. This class will teach some Alice programming for the first few weeks, to make a more gentle and imagination captivating transition to learning programming. Alice is a movie making and story telling animation approach to learning some thought processes and patterns involved in programming. 810:023 Microcomputer Systems is only offered once per year, always during the spring semester. See the following URL's to read more about the certificate. http://cns2.uni.edu/~jacobson/cert.html http://access.uni.edu/book/ca0/ca000c.html This summer, the 810:088 Topics in Computing will be taught. COURSE SUMMER 2007 OPEN TAKEN DAY TIME Begin End ---------- -------------------------- ---- ----- --- ----- ----- ----- 810:088:01 TOPC WEB DESIGN WITH FLASH 21 4 M W 02:00 06/04 07/27 The Flash class goes from 2-5 on Monday and Wednesday during the June/July 8 week session. In past summers, I have had students who had to miss class for RAGBRAI week or for a week and a half because of getting married and going on a honeymoon or for a required work training, etc. I am very flexible about covering what was missed for any student during the summer in cases like this. The teadching load is one class and the grading is only for 10 or 12 students instead of 20 or 25 or 30, so that is NOT a problem. The 810:088 class substitutes for the 810:030 class, if you take it. It can actually be used to substitute for the 810:023 class instead, if needed. Even if you are NOT planning on taking the 9 additional hours of classes (022, 023 and 088 or 030) for the certification, you might want to take the 810:022 class next fall, as it will increase your ability with application software like Flash, Photoshop, Excel and Access and general web stuff. The 810:030 class taken with the 810:022 class will increase your problem solving ability and knowledge of windows and graphics quite considerably. See you in Studio 2 on Friday. Enjoy the new carpet there on the first floor at you arrive at the class! :-) Mark
