Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2008 23:30:20 -0600 (CST) From: Mark Jacobson To: 810-022-01-fall@uni.edu Subject: Flash assignment, review today's class, preview of Friday... Hi 023 students, After a long but inspiring meeting with an FoE committee I am on, I have yet to go home. Here is today's Flash example you saw on two of the handouts: http://www.uni.edu/jacobson/nov19th/maskTVfinalFour.html Here is the link to your completed assignments, and at the top of the page is a link to the newest Flash assignment, so you can see what other students have done for theirs. Only one student is done so far, but it is usually helpful to see more examples if you are wondering what to do. http://www.cs.uni.edu/~jacobson/022/fw/a1.html I love the sports teams, dogs, guitars, sports drinks, and I have learned new things about art works and the English football league and cartoon characters from South Park and Chico, California and Heavy Metal Bands I am now heavily into. I gotta learn to ride Snowmobile, after my ski trip to Colorado and wow, you gotta love Nickalodeon and its cartoons, especially the semester you are teaching Maya, the software that got an academy award in 2003... You gotta love the Regents schools, who doesn't love them, Iowa State and Iowa and UNI... Cars, cars, cars... They are going to change so much so fast, but you gotta love the creativity of cars, especially the Corvette. Who cannot be stunned by and enjoy Adobe CS4, or anticipating what earlier this semester was coming, and is now here, And UNI football results. Wow! And now the postseason is almost here, and the walk-on from Waukon coaches the great players forward followed by great fans how far... who knows... Last but not least, I hope I haven't missed anyone, connected to two of My Favorite Things of all time... UNI volleyball, and Ballet... I have seen the Joffrey Ballet 17 times at Hancher Auditorium over the years. Spring break 1977 in Chicago I saw the American Ballet Theatre perform Don Quixote and it changed my life forever. I went back to the martial arts and Tae Kwon Do because it was too late to be a dancer leap high into the air and dance with ballerinas, but the martial arts has its own poetry of motion, and can also come in handy for releasing stress and if someone appears to be in trouble with some bullies or criminal element. UNI volleyball, like Iowa field hockey, really like dance whether ballet or modern... UNI volleyball, like UNI Track and Field, UNI VB like UNI BB, Thrills, sweet sixteens, tournament championships, fluid motion, music, beautiful sets and scenes and characters and costumes and dramas. Am I talking about GBPAC or West Gym, Don Quixote in Chicago or UNI versus Minnesota in the West Gym or UNI versus Missouri State in Normal, Illinois taking the Missouri Valley championship? Can't ever be enough said, so enough said is best said... Or saying UNI volleyball and the Joffrey or Kirov or Houston or Omaha or American Ballet Theatre or Royal Canadian Ballet or Miami City Ballet or Pilobilus modern dance group, or UNI's Orchesis dance group or Iowa's Dance Gala. There is two short glitches at the very beginning, but its all okay after that on the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGJaTNb6Zmw&feature=related Joffrey Ballet 12 pieces by 4 choreographers to Prince songs world premiered in Iowa City at Hancher, then went to the Kennedy Center and to Washington D.C. Same for a brand new version of the Nutcracker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYDzOAXYD2c&feature=related I saw Billboards 3 times and the Nutcracker Christmas classic ballet about 10 or 12 times (by the Joffrey). Anyway, please look over your fellow students assignments. It can be very inspiring and thought provoking and get you off on a tangent. Eventually, its back to the cosine. Cosine again. Tommorrow, I will try to put up some information about how to do the twirling in Flash. Please let me know if you have just downloaded Flash to your computer and got the CS 4 instead of the CS 3 version. Since CS4 has just been released, its very hard to find and download the older version, which is what I have been teaching. I will install the newer version on a computer as a 30 day trial so I am familiar enough with it and have access to it to answer questions that arise if you are using the newer version 30 day trial. It may be possible depending on when you bought the CS3 version of Flash or of Adobe Web Suite or Master Collectio or whatever, that you will get a free upgrade to CS4. I bought my $509 Master Collection in August, if I remember right, or maybe early September. I expect I am out of luck, but maybe not. In any case, I do not plan to purchase any new Adobe and certainly not the master collection. I expect UNI will NOT upgrade to Adobe CS4 until the summer of 2010, but I have not found any spare time to track down whoever makes the decision on that and would know. I don't think they are going to do it over Christmas break????? But who knows. If you do, or if you find out, PLEASE TELL ME! There are NOT enough hours in the day. You certainly do NOT have to have your assignment published to the web page by Friday. After Friday's hands on class, you will see it is very easy to create the twirling text effect. You will see it is much, much, much easier to publish Flash movies up to sunny.uni.edu than it is to publish and move Fireworks assignments up to the sunny web server! Much, much, much easier. However, the first one is a little tricky. In light of the fact that I did not get time to demonstrate those basics this week in class because of group exercises work, and in light of the fact I will need the time over Thanksgiving break to download and try out Flash CS4 on a departmental computer, and in light of the fact that Friday at 5 p.m. is thankfully, the start of a much needed and long anticipated Thanksgiving break, and in honor of my going to my first NCAA final four since 1999 and the magic and lucky number seventh final four I will have witnessed when I go this weekend, I need to leave on Friday late afternoon to get there, so ... you certainly do NOT have to email me the URL to your published animated Flash fade in/fade out twirling text intro page before Thanksgiving break starts or before Thanksgiving break is over. I am flexible, okay. Not as much as I used to be when I did Tae Kwon Do and Yoga more often, or Sho Ryn Rya karate with Yoga. So don't worry about it if you don't finish it and get it published before Thanksgiving. > In light of the fact that I did not get time to demonstrate those > basics this week in class because of group exercises work, and This is a GOOD THING. Thanks for doing a great job in the group exercises in class. I hope to do more of that after break and more of that in 023 and 088 next spring too. > In light of the fact that I did not get time to demonstrate those > basics this week in class because of group exercises work, and This indeed is a very good thing, I think. What do you think? Feedback and comments appreciated. Also, if you have questions about the assigment or problems with it, all that is needed is send email and get it answered or send email and make an appointment. http://www.cs.uni.edu/~jacobson/c022.html has the links, as usual... See you on Friday. Mark P.S. Consider also the following class. I had a handout ready today, but we got too busy and I forgot to hand it out before we ran out of time, precious time. http://www.cs.uni.edu/~jacobson/23/c023plan.html Adobe After Effect - 9 classes First time that software has ever been taught in a CS department class will be spring of 2009. P.S. University of Iowa field hockey made the final four for the first time since 1999, so I will be at my 5th field hockey final four and my 7th final four for all NCAA sports on Saturday and Sunday! Hopefully, that is excuse enough and you will forgive me for the loooooooooong and rambling, crazy email note. I should try to find the old email notes from 1999 and 2001 and 2002 when UNI made the sweet sixteen in the NCAA volleyball tournament. You would then see that this note is just the tip of the iceberg, so you got off easy! :-) Oh ya, it does occur to me I should give you a warning. ...WARNING... The rock ballet Billboards debuted and was a replacement for a ballet that had been in the works that did not go through because of problems in the US economy meant corporate sponsors and gifts got cut back and the Joffrey could not afford to go ahead with developing a new version of a major ballet. The ballet that they did not end up unveiling a brand new version of to the world because it was too costly and times were hard economically was the classic story and famous ballet Cinderella. Cinderella. UNI volleyball and the 2008 Missouri Valley tournament. Cinderella. UNI and Wichita State. Undefeated, favored, 11th ranked, 28-0 Wichita State, with 28-0 Penn State as the only two undefeated teams in the USA, in Division I volleyball.... Versus our perennial powerhouse in volleyball Panthers... Who came oh so close to beating them last month at their place.... Just a warning... Cinderella is a fairy tale with a full galaxy of meaning because it represents in part the triumph of the underdog, which UNI volleyball usually isn't in the Missouri Valley. We usually are highly favored, of course, which makes this 2008 tournament next week so potentially full of sweetness as to compare to the magic of 1999 and 2001 and 2002!
