From jacobson@math-cs.cns.uni.edu Tue Aug 30 18:15:14 2005 Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 13:14:45 -0500 (CDT) From: Mark Jacobson To: 810-022-01@uni.edu Subject: [810-022-01] Hands-on class on Thursday, Sept 1st... Hi 022 students (MASI class 8 TTh), On Thursday, we will meet in the Wright 112 lab, which has a total of 28 PCs. This class does NOT require that you have any previous programming experience. You will learn the basics by getting some experience with PERL and with VBA (Excel and Access VBA) macros. With the class being small, we actually can have everyone or almost everyone use PhotoShop at once in the lab. I can't remember for sure, but I think we have 10 licenses or 12 or so??? We will work with partners on Photoshop when needed, if it is only 10. I cannot assume you have had any EXCEL or HTML and web page stuff before, because students take this class having had many different instructors for our 810:021 class, or having had any programming class or any information systems overview class as a prerequisite. If you go for the certificate in applications, you will find that taking this class will be easier if you have already had Visual Basic, but on the other hand, if you take this class first, Visual Basic class will be much easier when you take that in the future. http://www.cns.uni.edu/~jacobson/ http://www.cns.uni.edu/~jacobson/c022.html http://www.cns.uni.edu/~jacobson/dodea/ex.html VBA Macros - 23 birthdays simulation Racing rectangles - VBA macros applied to graphical objects and "games". For this week, you need to read and reread the web site materials. It is the best way to review your first 3 lecture/demonstration classes. Also, better yet also try out things with Excel and VBA macros using WordArt or rectangles or whatever. I will try to have your first assignment ready to hand out on Thursday in class, and if so, it will not be due for until either one week later or else 12 days later. Next week, we will start going through the Access VBA book. Mark
