It has now been corrected. As you all know, there are no prerequisites for the class. The following web page has information about the spring class, in case you want to tell any of your friends about it who might be interested. http://www.cs.uni.edu/~jacobson/maya/maya3D.html *** 810:023 Microcomputer Systems *** If any of you wish to take 810:023 Microcomputer Systems class in the spring, the Maya class you have taken is plenty of background and prerequisite for taking that class. It is a course that is part of the microcomputer applications certification and certificate that the computer science department offers. Topics: Computer Hardware - scanners, printers, CPUs, memory, storage, microprocessors, monitors, how it all works Heavy emphasis on hardware as relates to computer graphics and animation and multimedia. Understanding binary and hexadecimal enough to apply the concepts to web colors and how computer graphics actually works on scanners and monitors and printers. Applications to networks too to appreciate how networks traffic gets from www.uni.edu to www.google.com, and so on. Computer Software - how operating systems work and understanding enough to be more effective with Mac and PC software. Computer Networks - how computer networks work from ethernet and local area networks to the internet and the world wide web. New Software Skills: 1. Dreamweaver and developing web pages and information relevant to the class on topics relevant to the class. 2. Flash will be a fairly significant focus of the class and there will be up to 15 hands-on classes in Studio IT 1 or 2 or 3 that teach you enough Flash to: a. create an interactive online quiz of questions you make up on a topic you present a tutorial of web page information about. b. learn enough actionscript to make some of your Flash movies interactive, such as the quiz above or such as a simple puzzle game. c. learn how to import something you have created in Adobe After Effects into a Flash movie. I have in mind the 3D graphics effects. 3. Learn a few things about Adobe After Effects. Puppet animation and text effects, probably. 4. Use the ethereal packet sniffiing software to look at network packets and understand how TCP/IP and ethernet work. 5. Understanding enough Unix on the sunny.uni.edu web server to be comfortable maintaining your class web site for publishing your assignments. There will be no textbook for the class. There will be lots of handouts for the class, along with lots of online pages and video tutorials we will use. The class will be highly project based, including at least one group project. Projects will often be mini-projects just to learn a few skills in a software package you have never used before. Mark
