Code.org "Plugged" Activities

Purpose

Most Competency Activities that you will complete in this course will consist of a single, "large" assignment.  However, this one is very different.  It consists of multiple small assignments that will be spread out over the entirety of Unit 1.  You will demonstrate competency on Standard P1 by completing a set of assigned materials.

Assignment

Over the course of several weeks you will complete multiple "plugged" lessons.  Each lesson consists of multiple "stages."  Code.org assesses your progress on a lesson by using color coded symbols.  When you first get started each stage will appear as a white symbol.  But as you make progress and "complete" each stage, they will fill in as a solid green color:

You will also see this at the top of each stage as you progress through the lesson:

It is possible that you attempt a puzzle/stage and while you "complete" the puzzle you don't get the "right" answer.  If that happens you will see that symbol gain a green outline but it won't fill in solid green. Instead, it fills in a lighter green (this can be hard to see).  Notice that there are circles around stages 8, 11, and 19 in the example below but the center is a different color.

When I click on the circle for stage 11 it will take me to that puzzle/stage:

It is a LITTLE easier to see the color difference here. If I look just below this progress tracker I will notice some advice on how to fix the problem:

Notice that it tells me that I should be able to do it with 4 blocks of my own (5 blocks if you include the "when run" block. But right now I am using 9 blocks. You need to keep working until you get it to turn full green.

Grade

To complete Standard P1 you must complete lots of "little" activities over a multi-week period.  But the good news is this is fairly easy to do and get a full credit score since you have an extended period of time to work and ask questions if you just aren't getting the full green circles.

The expected deadline for the end of Unit 1 which will be Thursday, February 9th.

At that time, you will be assigned one of the following scores for Standard P1.

4 Every single level/stage from the assigned lessons is completed (Fully Dark Green).
3 Every single level/stage has been attempted with no more than a dozen that are not yet complete.
2 Progress has been made in most Lessons.
1 Multiple lessons show no progress or completion.

I have to stress that I would expect that EVERYONE can earn a 4 on this Competency Activity/Standard.  It's simply a matter of putting in the time over the Unit to complete each puzzle/stage.  Stay on schedule and this is not difficult.

Submitting work

As long as you:

  1. Have a Teacher account with Code.org (see part 1)
  2. Have registered with my class section (see part 1)
  3. Were logged in when you completed the four lessons (see part 2)

You do not need to do anything special to submit your work.  Your progress will be recorded and is visible to me in my teacher dashboard.
