Group 0.1 - Reflecting on Teaching and Learning

Activity Background

The primary focus of this small group reflection is to visit about your team's beliefs about teaching and learning as you discussed in reflection 0.1. You may also, however, include discussion about what you read in reflection 0.2. As you complete Reflection 0.1 and 0.2 and upload them to the class Google Drive I would ask you to email your other group members so that they know are there. Again, the sharing of these documents should be completed by Wednesday, January 26.

After you have shared your individual reflections and had a chance to read over those submitted by the other group members, you should schedule a chance to meet online to work on consolidating your individual reflections into a group response.  This may be easy, if you all tend to have similar views on teaching and learning, or it may be a real challenge if you simply don't agree.  Reality is that it probably lies somewhere in between.

In this summary document/report you should try to identify both the commonalities and the differences between members of your group and reflect about them.  Again, this isn't a right/wrong situation.  So please be gentle when it comes to disagreeing. Instead, try to listen and understand what each person says/beliefs without judgement.

Just to put this in some perspective, my mentor when we were creating the CSEd program - Dr. East - and I talk about teaching and learning a LOT.  He and I have very SIMILAR beliefs on the fundamentals of learning but very DIFFERENT beliefs about how to facitlitate that learning through our teaching. However, we like to talk about teaching and learning for this very reason.  We like to gently "argue" back and forth and try to show the other person where we come from.  Often I make adjustments to my teaching based on these discussions.  I am convinced I am a better teacher for listening to his rationale even when it differs from my final conclusions for me and my students.

Furthermore, do not forget that your group is encouraged to have a broad discussion regarding what is going on in the course.  As you do so, it is possible that you may have some questions for me.  If those come up, PLEASE email me with your questions.
