I'm not saying that
<A HREF="http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/">
   Doug</A>
doesn't have a social life; for all I know, he's
a wild and crazy guy.  But he has the well-earned
reputation of answering e-mail at all hours of the
day.  I've sent him e-mail at midnight, only to
have an answer hit my box within minutes.  His
grad students all tell me they've had the same
experience, only at even more nocturnal hours.
They are in awe.  I'm a mix of envious and relieved.

I don't know why this was the first thought that
popped into my head when I read Becky's post just
now.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact
that I'm sitting in my office at 7:30 PM on a Friday
evening.  (Shh.  Don't tell my students.)
