TITLE: "No, We're Laughing with You" AUTHOR: Eugene Wallingford DATE: November 16, 2006 5:28 PM DESC: ----- BODY: It seemed an innocent enough question to ask my CS 1 class. "Do you all know how to make a .zip file?" My students laughed at me. As near as I could tell, it was unanimous. For a brief second I felt old. But it wasn't that long ago that students in my courses had to be shown how to zip up a directory, so perhaps their reaction is testimony more to the inexorable march of technology than to my impending decrepitude. At least most of them seemed interested when I offered to show them how to make a .jar file en route to creating a double-clickable app from their slideshow program. I may be a dinosaur, but I'm not completely useless to them. Yet. -----
