The student.cs Server
The department student server, student.cs.uni.edu,
provides SQLite and a number of other tools we will use this
semester. You can log in to it using your CatID. If you have
never worked with Unix before or are having difficulty with these
instructions, let me know. We can work through the steps together.
- How to access the server...
- ... from Linux: Open a shell and enter the command
ssh username@student.cs.uni.edu
- ... from Mac OS X: Terminal is the Mac app that acts as
a Unix shell. Open Terminal and enter the command
ssh username@student.cs.uni.edu
In Finder, you can find Terminal by clicking on the "Go"
menu in the title bar, selecting "Utilities" near the
bottom of the drop-down menu, and double-clicking on
the Terminal app icon in the window that opens.
- ... from Windows: In the CS labs, Windows machines come
with the program PuTTY installed. Use the Start menu to
find and launch PuTTY. Enter the server name
student.cs.uni.edu in the dialog box that
opens up. Follow the instructions that come next to
log in.
- How to copy a file from the server to your computer...
- ... on Linux and Mac OS X: Open a shell and enter the
command
scp username@student.cs.uni.edu:path/to/filename path/to/destination/
Replace the italicized bits with your username and the path
to the directory where you'd like to store the file. To copy
the file to your current directory, use a period.
- ... on Windows: In the CS labs, Windows machines come with
the program WinSCP installed. There is an alias to it on
the desktop. You can also access it through the Start menu.
- How to copy a file from your computer to the server...
- ... on Linux and Mac OS X: You can use the scp
command with the arguments reversed:
scp path/to/file username@student.cs.uni.edu:
- ... on Windows: You can use the same WinSCP program to
copy files in reverse.
