2020/11/09  ...   Homework 7 is available now. The link is still under Week 12; it's due on Friday. I hope it does not take long... The first problem is similar to the exercise we did in class last week, applying the decomposition algorithm. The middle three problems are "one liners" that give you a chance to use the basic syntax of INSERT, DELETE, and UPDATE statements. Problem 5 is only a bit more complex: it includes arithmetic!

2020/10/26  ...   I have posted Homework 6. The link is still under Week 10, but you have a full week to work on it. (It's due one week from today.)

Don't forget to work through the online session for Week 10. There is a small deliverable. More importantly, it introduces the GROUP BY clause and reviews NATURAL JOIN. Both are useful on the homework.

2020/10/23  ...   Both sessions for Week 10 are posted. There is a small deliverable for the online session. Work through the online session with an eye on the big ideas you see. Stick with it long enough to reach the section on the GROUP BY clause. It is quite handy!

2020/10/17  ...   Homework 5 is available. It asks you to write SQL queries. SQL programs are text, so you will create and submit a text file, not a Word doc or PDF file.

2020/10/16  ...   Both online sessions for Week 9 are posted. There is a small deliverable for the second online session. The second session picks up where the first one ends. Work through them both in sqlite3.

I will post Homework 5 in the next couple of days, no later than Monday. It will ask for SQL programs!

2020/10/15  ...   The first online session for Week 9 is up. Sorry the delay. You don't have to submit anything for this one. Tomorrow I will post the second session for the week.

Don't forget about Homework 4, which is due tonight!

2020/10/09  ...   Week 8's class notes are now available, as are Homework 4 and Week 8's online session. The homework gives you another chance to practice writing relational algebra queries. The online session introduces a couple of new features of SQLite that will be very useful, along with one new SQL idea! There is a deliverable for the on-line session.

2020/10/08  ...   Week 8's class notes are now available. I will activate the link for Homework 4 tomorrow, followed soon after by the link for Week 8's online session. The homework will give you another chance to practice writing relational algebra queries. The online session will introduce a new feature of SQLite that will be very useful!

2020/09/18  ...   Both of this week's online sessions are available and linked below. The second session introduces a few more features of SQL and SQLite, with a lot of code demo. Check it out soon and let me know if you have any questions! Both sessions have deliverables.

2020/09/16  ...   This week's first online session 1 is available and linked below. It looks long in the browser, but that's misleading. It's a step-by-step example using SQLite with a lot of code demo. Check it out soon and let me know if you have any questions! There is a deliverable.

2020/09/14  ...   We will not have class in person this week. Watch for one or two online activities. You can spend the rest of your time working through last week's online activity, completing Homework 2, and preparing for the exam next week.

2020/09/11  ...   Homework 2 is available. Let me know if you have any questions.

2020/09/10  ...   This week's online activity is available. Work through it before class next week. There is a deliverable for this one, so send it to me after you are done. Exam 1 will be the online activity for Week 6. That will give us time to wrap up the first unit of the course and get a bit more practice with Homework 2.

2020/09/08  ...   I have updated the schedule below with this week's reading assignment, which now includes a link directly into the online textbook. We are still working with material in Chapter 8. Note, too, that Exam 1 has been postponed to Week 6. That will give us time to wrap up the first unit of the course and get a bit more practice with Homework 2.

2020/09/07  ...   I have updated the schedule below with this week's reading assignment, which now includes a link directly into the online textbook. We are still working with material in Chapter 8. Note that there was no online activity last week. Instead, you have a homework assignment to do.

2020/08/27  ...   I have activated the link to the Resources page at the right. Currently, it lists only personal resources, not database-specific resources.

2020/08/16  ...   Welcome to CS 3140! This page has links to everything you will need for the course. The dates, topics, and assignments are all tentative until we get closer to the activity.
