Ghostbusters introduction for Fall 2016 CS 1025 FYO
Attitude to problem solving and quantitative thinking is a central theme

Basis for small group discussion and exercise during Friday's and Monday's class.
Due on MONDAY, but I hope to collect some of them on Friday!
Why? To look over ahead of time to be better prepared for Monday's class.

Purpose 1:
Bringing written results of your brainstorming for small group discussion on Friday (or Monday).

Purpose 2:
Previewing the first of the main set of key ideas that will be illustrated with scenes from the following four movies:

  1. Ghostbusters
  2. Pretty Woman
  3. Dances With Wolves
  4. Much Ado About Nothing

Purpose 3:
Celebrating problem solving and creative, critical thinking and how to develop and apply it in future classes at UNI.

Attitudes and lessons and approaches for LAC classes, UNI electives, for classes in your major.

Other endeavors too (career, hobbies, citizenship, communication, family, friendship, writing, art, music, design, troubleshooting, travel ...).

  1. Watch Scott, Jennifer and Dr. Peter Venkman: Two minute long YouTube clip: Ghostbuster's and Venkman's ESP test with Scott and Jennifer as subjects. From Scene Two of movie.
Question #1: What does Scott guess for the first card that Venkman holds up?
What was the actual shape or correct answer for that first card?

Question #2: What does Jennifer guess for the card's shape for her first guess? 0:20-0:32
What was the actual shape that Venkman was holding up for Jennifer's first turn?

  2. Read the material from Coaching the Artist Within (by Eric Maisel). This was handed out in class on Wednesday during class #2. Take some notes on this reading.
Question #3: React to it, quote it, comment about it, ask questions about it,
speculate how it applies to Ghostbusters and problem solving,
education, sports, music, dance, writing, art and/or your major.

Just do it and do something, do anything with it!
Question #3 is a brain storm, open ended.
Should be 1/4 to 1/2 a page of handwritten notes
                                      and/or quotes
                                      and/or reactions to it
and/or confusions about it. ANYTHING is fine!

Relate it to the Dr. Peter Venkman quote, to coaching,
to being an artist, musician, student, or athlete.

Relating it to the quote or to ANYTHING at all listed above
is okay and is the goal for "Question #3" task!

  3. Look up the word "attitude" in the dictionary. Write down the definition you found from any online or actual book dictionary you want to use.
Question #4: One dictionary definition for attitude is:

  4. See page EEE of the EricMaisel2.pdf handout. (Coaching the Artist Within on 5 pages instead of reduced to a 1 page handout). EEE is page 5.
Question #5: Write out by quoting
or paraphrasing the "simple three-step procedure".
                                                 ---------------------------

It is on your handout from today's class #2,
but also is here and easier to find and read on page EEE too.

Write down the simple three-step procedure that is given on page EEE:
    1. First, you ...
    2. Second, you ...
    3. Third, you ...

  5. Bring your hand-written sheet of paper with the answers to Question #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 to class on Friday, if you get it done by then. I hope a few are turned in on Friday! I do want to see SOME of them before we have small group discussions on Monday when all the rest will be collected during class #4!
